1987 1988

Eleanor Smeal, Peg Yorkin, Toni Carabillo, Judith Meuli, and Kathy Spillar found the Feminist Majority in the fall of 1987. The purpose is to promote equality for women and men, non-violence, social justice and economic development and to enhance feminist participation in public policy. The mission is to empower feminists, who are the majority, and to win equality for women at the decision-making tables of the state, nation, and the world.

Feminist Majority President Eleanor Smeal, Board Chair Peg Yorkin, and National Coordinator Kathy Spillar lead a fact-finding trip to European and Scandinavian countries. They meet with women's rights leaders and public officials to discuss strategies to put more women in power and the greater success women in these countries have had in obtaining political representation for women.

NEW INITIATIVE --The organization immediately launches the Feminization of Power Tour in 11 states and 39 cities to increase the numbers of women running for and winning elective office.

The Feminist Majority releases a new study that reveals that at the present rate of growth of women in Congress it will take until the year 2333 for women to achieve equality in Congress and until the year 2038 for women to achieve equality in the state legislatures. Women are 5% of Congress and 15.6% of the state legislatures. Feminist Majority Foundation promotes "5%" button to raise awareness of this grave disparity in political power. The year 2333 is widely quoted and the perspective of women making gradual gains is radically altered forever. Over the course of the five year campaign, l987 -1992, some 685 women's groups across the nation endorse the campaign and receive Feminization of Power materials. Increasing representation of women in elective office moves to the top of the women's movement agenda.

NEW PLEDGE - Participants at Feminization of Power events proudly proclaim in the tradition of the suffragists: "I pledge not to work for, nor support with my vote, money, or time, any candidate who does not support and work for women's rights and feminist principles."

Feminist Majority develops Feminist Agenda which begins with an historical summary of feminist activity since the first Women's Rights Convention, in Seneca Falls, New York, l848. The Agenda is based upon the National Plan of Action of the National Women's Conference, Houston, Texas in 1978.
